Pushing the envelope: Why was Kim's letter for Trump so big?

North Korean official arrives in New York for talks with Pompeo

Itsunori Onodera said North Korea agreed to give up nuclear weapons as early as 1994, but has continued to develop them in secret and until previous year threatened surrounding countries with a series of ballistic missile launches.

Kim Yong Chol, the North Korean leader's top aide, is the highest-ranking North Korean official to visit the United States in 18 years, and his trip to the White House will be a highly symbolic sign of easing tensions after fears of war escalated amid North Korean nuclear and missile tests last year.

"We talked about nearly everything".

Washington wants North Korea to quickly give up all its nuclear weapons in a verifiable way in return for sanctions and economic relief.

The current rapprochement on the peninsula was triggered by the games, to which the North sent athletes, cheerleaders, and his sister as an envoy.

"I told him today, take your time", Trump said.

North Korean official Kim Yong Chol to deliver personal letter from Kim Jong Un to President Trump at the White House as summit preparations gain momentum; Kevin Corke reports.

"We'll see what happens", Trump said on Thursday.

"Good meeting today. I think it's a great start", Trump said after conferring for about 90 minutes with Kim Yong Chol, who became the first North Korean official to visit the White House in 18 years and who the US president called "the second most powerful man in North Korea".

He expressed Moscow's support for a declaration last month in which North and South Korea agreed to work for the denuclearisation of the peninsula. "I think they're good".

Barr took to Twitter to apologize for the smear saying, "I apologize to Valerie Jarrett and to all Americans". On Wednesday, President Trump broke his silence on Barr, who has been one of his most outspoken supporters.

After meeting with Kim Yong Chol on Thursday morning in New York, Pompeo said the two sides made "real progress" but declined to discuss specifics.

Speaking to reporters on the White House lawn after the successful meeting with the travelling envoy, he said he believes Kim is ready to drop his nuclear arsenal.

Seoul welcomed Trump's meeting with Kim Yong Chol at the White House.

With relations thawing, the U.S. has pledged to help rebuild North Korea's economy if it agrees to give up its nuclear weapons.

Mr Trump said the June 12 meeting would be "a beginning". Vox looks at four possible scenarios, ranging from "small deal and more talks" to the North agreeing to de-nuclearize. He referred to it as a "very nice" letter, though. With just two weeks left before that date, a later date may also have to be considered.
