Egypt 0 Uruguay 1: Gimenez Winner Spares Suarez's Blushes

Mohamed Salah

Uruguay ran away as winners in their opener but would expect a better show from their attackers next when they go up against Saudi Arabia in their second game on Wednesday.

Egypt coach Hector Cuper said he could assure fans "almost 100 per cent" Salah will play some part in Yekaterinburg.

Jose Gimenez proved Uruguay's saviour with a 90th-minute victor against Egypt in Ekaterinburg.

Salah carried Egypt to their first World Cup since 1990, scoring five of their eight goals in qualifying, including a dramatic stoppage-time penalty against Congo to seal their place in Russian Federation.

Salah has not played since Liverpool's 3-1 defeat to Real Madrid and Los Blancos defender Ramos faced criticism from certain quarters in the aftermath of the match.

Toyota breaks its curse, Alonso feeling the 'rhythm of the night'
It later turnout out that Kamui Kobayashi had simply forgotten to pit and was asked to conserve fuel to make it through the lap. Alonso's victory completes the second part of motorsport's "triple crown" for the two-time Formula 1 world champion.

Egypt were right not to start Mohamed Salah in their opening World Cup fixture against Uruguay, according to Jermaine Jenas.

The first match of the group and the tournament saw World Cup host Russian Federation unexpectedly blast Saudi Arabia by a count of 5-0 on Thursday.

Suarez returned a favour to his strike partner by setting up Cavani to volley from the edge of the area before drawing a world class save from the custodian.

Egypt offered little in Salah's absence and are now under pressure heading into a clash with Russian Federation, while Uruguay - and particularly Suarez - can breathe a sigh of relief.

After the match Cuper claimed while Salah would have a welcome addition, he did not want to take any risks with his star man and stated his belief Salah would feature in future contests.

Instead, they chose the flawless time to find their form with plenty of help from a woeful Saudi Arabia side that now must face up to the firepower of Luis Suarez, Edison Cavani and Salah. With a victory, Uruguay could reach the next stage with a game in hand against host Russian Federation on June 25.

Egypt is now the third before Saudi Arabia, the fourth.

Uruguay, though, are a team used to starting slowly in World Cups.

Uruguay have won their opening match at a World Cup tournament for the first time since 1970, when they beat Israel.

Salah was forced to leave the stadium teary-eyed after the first 30 minutes of the game.
