Jordan army begins delivering aid to Syrians stranded near border

Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah speaks

"They are stranded there and they are facing some of the most dire condictions - it's summer now, it's getting hotter and they've been fleeing from extreme escalation of fighting in their areas".

On Friday, the Israeli military announced it had provided several tons of humanitarian aid to southwestern Syria, but would not be accepting the tens of thousands of refugees from the area who had begun streaming toward the Israeli border.

Insurgent negotiators had held meetings with Russian Federation to try to agree on a deal for all of Deraa province to come back under government sovereignty, but without the army or police entering the area.

According to the statement, Israel deployed additional tank and artillery forces on the Syrian front on Sunday as a precaution given intensified fighting over the border between the Syrian army and rebels.

On Saturday, the monitor said at least eight battered opposition-held towns in southern Syria had returned to regime control under Russian-brokered deals after almost two weeks of bombardment.

The UK-based war monitor said at least more eight towns surrendered on Saturday under deals brokered by Russian Federation with local officials and fighters.

Russian Federation is demanding rebels either agree to leave the contested areas with their families or accept the return of state rule.

Jordan, which is already hosting 660,000 registered refugees, says it can not accept any more and has sealed its border, despite appeals from aid groups. The northwestern chunk of Daraa province remains in opposition hands. Jordan has been facilitating talks between rebel factions and Moscow over a deal that would end the violence in return for the return state rule to Deraa province.

More than 350,000 people have been killed in Syria since the war started in 2011 with the brutal repression of anti-government protests.

The IDF reiterated in its statement Sunday that Israel would continue to adhere to its formal policy of non-intervention with regards to the Syrian civil war "while reacting firmly to cases in which Israeli sovereignty is harmed and Israeli civilians are threatened".

The entire southwest is part of a "de-escalation zone" agreed previous year by Russian Federation, the United States and Jordan.

The UN refugee agency has reported that the number of displaced civilians in southern Syria has more than tripled in recent days, with over 160,000 now displaced from their homes in a little over a week.

UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Zeid Raad Al Hussein warned that many civilians risk being trapped between government forces, rebels, and ISIS, which has a small foothold there - an outcome he said would be a "catastrophe".

At least five at people were killed in regime bombardment of Deraa on Saturday, the Observatory said, taking the civilian death toll in the province to 105, including 19 children, since June 19.

The opposition's chief negotiator in wider United Nations peace talks, Nasr al-Hariri, last week accused the USA of complicity in Assad's southwest offensive, saying U.S. silence could only be explained by "a malicious deal".
