"This far-left rhetoric comes out every single time, but the apocalypse never comes", he said Monday on the floor of the Senate. Dean Heller, R-Nev., and each of the three Republican candidates for the seat being vacated by Sen.

The poll also found that 26 percent of registered Republicans cited immigration as the most important issue, while 16 percent of registered Democrats said healthcare was their top issue. Republican Senator Roy Blunt of Missouri told NBC's "Meet The Press" the president should take note of that political reality in his choice. "I was not elected to genuflect to the hard right, who are funded by corporate America".

SARAH MCCAMMON, BYLINE: Hey, Rachel. And a majority of senators saw through the hyperbole and hysteria and confirmed that qualified nominee.

Kavanaugh's 12 years as an appellate judge, combined with his Yale pedigree, Supreme Court clerkship under Kennedy and top posts in the Bush administration, give him a resume his predecessors can't match. But a couple of concerns have arisen.

A George W. Bush appointee to his current position, Kavanaugh had worked as counsel and staff secretary in the White House before his nomination. "So there is a lot to go through", she said. He has written roughly 300 opinions as a judge, authored several law journal articles, regularly taught law school classes and spoken frequently in public.

"I'll be deciding tonight or tomorrow sometime by 12 o'clock", he said.

Barrett of IN, 46, serves on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 7th Circuit.

Kavanaugh is likely to be more conservative than Justice Kennedy on a range of social issues. Susan Collins (Maine) and Lisa Murkowski (Alaska), seizing on their past support for abortion rights and their votes previous year to reject a bill that would repeal key parts of the ACA.

"I'm getting very close to making a final decision". Another potential mark against her is she's pretty new to the federal bench.

Widespread shock and outright hysteria quickly followed the news that President Trump would within two years get a second U.S. Supreme Court pick. He's been vetted before. He's an evangelical Christian, has a long judicial record, no real controversy on Capitol Hill.

President Trump delivered his Weekly Address.

But he suggested he might take time during his United Kingdom visit to speak with Johnson, who he described as "a friend of mine". Ian Lavery, chairman of the main opposition Labour Party, said, "This is absolute chaos and Theresa May has no authority left".

MCCAMMON: Well it's something he needs to think about, for sure. The liberals' effort probably will focus on moderate GOP senators, such as Maine's Susan Collins and Alaska's Lisa Murkowski, who might be wary of adding a hard-line conservative and risking decades-old precedents such as Roe v. Wade, which legalized abortion in 1973.

But whether Senate Democrats will stay united in opposition to Kavanaugh also is in question.

MARTIN: What's the timeline from there?

Judiciary members should seek "all of his writings and memos from his time at the White House". The president has spent the days leading up to his announcement discussing the pros and cons of various contenders with aides and allies. But the process of vetting the nominee will start right away.

Much of the groundwork for a successful confirmation comes in private meetings that the nominee will have with individual senators in the coming weeks. We could see hearings as soon as next month.

Other liberal activists said Democrats risked alienating their voting base if they support Kavanaugh's confirmation.

Chinese shares slipped further from early deals and pulled Asian markets down, while the yuan currency also weakened. The products, all sold on Chinese e-commerce platforms, ranged from pet food to mixed nuts and whiskey.

MARTIN: All right. NPR's Sarah McCammon for us this morning.
