Zimbabwe warns of crackdown after opposition vote protests

Zimbabwe elections on 'unlevel playing field,' say EU observers

The president, who has called on the opposition to "lose gracefully", said global election observers had told him they are "disappointed with the events of yesterday" that left at least six people dead.

Zimbabwean president and leader of the ruling Zimbabwe African National Union - Patriotic Front (ZANU-PF) Emmerson Mnangagwa, one of the 23 candidates on the presidential ballot, blamed the opposition for inciting violence in order "to disrupt electoral process".

The ruling party, Zanu-PF, says it is ready to peacefully concede defeat in the event that it loses the presidential elections, whose results are expected soon.

Violence swept through central Harare after an official announcement that the ruling ZANU-PF party had won most of the seats in Parliament, an outcome that enraged opposition supporters who believe they have been cheated of victory.

Zimbabwe's electoral commission says "sometime tomorrow (Thursday)" it will say when those will be announced.

A record 23 presidential candidates are in June cleared to stand.

McGregor will also be evaluated for an anger management program in addition to his five days of community service. White said McGregor justified the confrontation in a text exchange just before he turned himself in to police.

In his first public appearance since the vote on Monday, Chamisa urged his supporters to be calm and await "massive celebrations" for his victory. At least three people are killed. Hundreds of angry opposition supporters outside Zimbabwe's electoral commission were met by riot police firing tear gas.

The observers had been invited by the ZANU-PF's leader, President Emmerson Mnangagwa as part of his "guarantee" of a "free, fair and transparent election" and their verdict on the poll was mixed.

Another protester, Colbert Mugwenhi said, "We had no weapons".

Zimbabwe soldiers walk past a broken shop window in Harare on August 2 after election-related protests turned violent and resulted in three deaths. "If he had won this election the result will have been announced long back but they are trying to massage the figures to try to advance fictitious and fallacious results".

The much-criticised election authority meanwhile declares there has been no rigging, after the opposition repeatedly alleges the vote process was flawed.

"It is unfortunate that this election has descended into bloodshed, which could have been avoided if security forces had exercised restraint against protesters", said Colm Ó Cuanacháin, Amnesty International's Acting Secretary General.

The opposition cries foul, alleging fraud, and European Union observers say the elections were held on an "un-level playing field".

The military deployment was the first time that soldiers had appeared in the streets of the capital since Mugabe's departure in November.

He condemned violence as "unacceptable" and reiterated his belief that he was the victor of the elections. At one point, the relatives blocked hospital staff from wheeling the body to the mortuary and demanded a police explanation; a plainclothes officer said they could return Thursday to pick up the body after a police investigation.
