‘Chuck Chequers’: Boris Johnson offers UK PM advice about Brexit plan

Senior Tories hit back at Johnson over his claims Brexit plans 'deranged'

Mr Johnson, who resigned because of Mrs May's so-called Chequers plan in July, made his comments to a packed conference hall in Birmingham yesterday.

But she has since drawn criticism for overseeing major cuts to police budgets, a growing political issue amid rising crime and after a string of terror attacks.

The Prime Minister's decision to announce her long-awaited immigration policy late in the evening before Mr Johnson's speech was seen by some as an attempt to steal the media spotlight away from her most high-profile critic.

Just six months before Britain leaves on March 29, negotiations with the European Union have ground to a halt and May is caught between Brexiteers like Johnson and those who want to keep close economic ties with the bloc, Britain's biggest trading partner.

She moved within months to start the Brexit process and sought to bolster her domestic political position with a snap election in June a year ago. Many took it as mocking May's assertion that the most mischievous thing she had ever done was run through a field of wheat as a child.

She told the BBC Johnson's alternative Brexit proposals would, she said, tear up the United Kingdom by forcing Northern Ireland to operate separately from the rest of the U.K. On that score she is supported by leader Arlene Foster and the Democratic Unionist Party (DUP), the Northern Ireland party whose 10 seats are helping to keep the Conservatives in power.

The FBI’s Investigation of Kavanaugh Was a Sham
Senator Cindy Hyde-Smith was rushing to a vote when a woman shouted at her: "Do you believe survivors?" Hyde-Smith didn't answer. Democrats also demanded that the FBI privately brief the Senate about the investigation before the chamber votes.

The comments "brought immediate comparisons on social media to the "lock her up" calls from Donald Trump's supporters about former U.S. presidential candidate Hilary Clinton", says Business Insider.

At the foot of the stage there was a press scrum, cameras trained on former Brexit ministers David Davis and Steve Baker in the front row - alongside Stanley Johnson who'd come to see his son.

After charming the crowds, there was a hunger from some of those present for Johnson to go further and declare a leadership bid - something his aides say he is reluctant to do, yet.

Johnson, who left the government during the summer over his opposition to May's Brexit plans and is the bookmakers' favorite to replace her, has declined to say whether he would challenge her for the leadership. It will be a system that looks across the globe and attracts the people with the skills we need.

He said: "It is a fund to provide guidance and training to help them pursue a life in public service, and to encourage more people from diverse backgrounds to stand for Parliament, become MPs and help us truly represent the face of modern Britain".

He added: "I don't think this is a time to be talking about leadership challenges, it is a time to be supporting our Prime Minister as she takes forward this incredibly hard task of getting a deal with the European Union".

The message will have an audible tone, and the text will read, "THIS IS A TEST of the National Wireless Emergency Alert System". The message will be active for approximately 30 minutes, so users could receive the alert within that time frame.

There was loud applause and cheers as he said: "For one last time, I urge our friends in government to deliver what the people voted for, to back Theresa May in the best way possible - by softly, quietly, and sensibly backing her original plan [Lancaster House]".

Michael Edwards from Hastings, a Tory member for 40 years, said Johnson gave an "inspiring speech". "Northern Ireland is part of that union".

He said he was anxious the United Kingdom was "so demoralised and so exhausted" that it might submit to foreign rule, a clear attack on May's Brexit plans.

"We are all ... members of the Conservative and Unionist party".

"We've had our arguments, but now is the time to put them behind us, now is the time to come together, because this is a moment for the optimists", he said.
