Emails show Facebook used Israeli app to monitor phones, mulled selling data

Internal docs show Facebook absolutely loves your data

A memo similarly describes reciprocity as "an equable value exchange between a third-party developer and Facebook", involving "high-quality experiences" for Facebook users or direct payments "in return" for "access to out Platform".

On Wednesday, a British parliamentary committee made public numerous damaging internal emails and documents showing that the company allowed "special access" to users' data to partner companies like Lyft and Netflix while denying access to competitors such as Vine.

"The idea of linking access to friends data to the financial value of the developers relationship with Facebook is a recurring feature of the documents".

Facebook responded quickly, saying the release was misleading without context and that the documents "are only part of the story". "We explored multiple ways to build a sustainable business with developers who were building apps that were useful to people", the company said in a statement.

A United Kingdom parliamentary committee released a series of documents today which reveal, among other things, that Facebook knew triggering an Android permissions dialog during an app update that would collect SMS and call logs would lead to "bad PR" and allegedly attempted to circumvent the process in order to make it hard for Android users to discover the new behavior.

Modric makes history to break Messi-Ronaldo Ballon d’Or duopoly
Lionel Messi was at home. "The club show me a lot of affection and I'd like to retire at Real Madrid ". A special message was played during the ceremony from Croatian president Kolinda Grabar-Kitarovic.

The report goes on to claim that surveys using an analytics company called Onavo looking at the usage of mobile apps by customers were conducted without their knowledge, which allowed it to see how often they used apps and decide which companies to acquire. "We blocked a lot of sketchy apps".

Critics have drawn attention to this kind of behavior as being potentially in violation of U.S. and European antitrust and anti-monopoly laws, as the dominant Facebook platform can arguably be seen blocking competitors attempts to enter its market.

One document said such competitor apps had previously needed Zuckerberg's approval before using tools Facebook makes available to app developers.

But by selectively "whitelisting" certain companies and apps in this policy change, the company was able to protect those apps that brought something to the Facebook platform - such as Airbnb and Netflix - while, it's argued, simultaneously blocking out any potential threats, such as the aforementioned Vine.

In one email, dated February 4, 2015, a Facebook engineer said a feature of the Android Facebook app that would "continually upload" a user's call and SMS history would be a "high-risk thing to do from a PR perspective".

Kid Rock booted from Nashville Christmas parade in favor of local hero
Well, it's officially the end of the line for Kid Rock in the Nashville Christmas Parade after controversy on Friday. Although parade owners stripped Rock of the honor, one corporate sponsor is adamantly defending him.

Last month, the committee seized confidential Facebook documents from the developer of a now-defunct bikini photo searching app as part of its investigation into fake news.

The release of the internal documents adds to Facebook's challenges as it wrestles with issues as varied as how it enabled the spread of misinformation and whether it properly safeguarded the data of its users. One e-mail from 2013, from a Facebook employee, reads: "Unless anyone raises objections, we will shut down their friends API access today". The Royal Bank of Canada requested access in one note, as did the dating apps Badoo and Hot or Not.

Facebook says that the documents may paint a selective picture of the company's actions. The company limited app developer access to lists of friends, other than those also using the same app, in most cases, according to the statement.

The internal emails also detail discussions regarding the collection of call and text logs from Android users. The app also sent valuable data on what types of apps people were downloading back to Facebook.
